Rembrandt |
 |
| Born: 1606 - Died: 1669. |
| Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn was the greatest Dutch painter and one of the most important artists in western European art. The psychological depth of his portraits and profound interpretations of the Bible remain unique. He was also an accomplished draughtsman and printmaker.
Rembrandt was born in Leiden, and first trained there with Jacob Isaacsz. van Swanenburgh. He finally moved permanently to Amsterdam in 1631/2.
In 1634 Rembrandt married Saskia van Uylenburgh. In 1649, after Saskia's death, Hendrickje Stoffels entered Rembrandt's household and in 1654 she gave birth to his child.
Rembrandt was initially successful as a portrait painter, and the self portraits he made throughout his life provide us with a remarkable pictorial autobiography.
Rembrandt, however, possibly thought of himself as a history painter, and this type of work is represented in a number of paintings of religious subjects. Rembrandt died at the age of sixty three.
