John Godward |
 |
| Born: 1861 - Died: 1922. |
| Little is known about Godward’s private life, which is not shown in his art. Melancholy, kindly, reclusive, handsome, talented and shy, J. W. Godward's life is still a mystery, protected by him. Unlike most Olympian Classicists before him, he preferred anonymity and privacy.
Alma Tadema and Godward is usually compared, in their work, due to style and content, however the similarity is purely superficial. Godward was really a painter of beauty and elegance.
Godward was the probably the best of the last great European painters to straight-forwardly embrace classical Greece and Rome in their art. This is his significance in art history, as he marked the end of Classical subject painting in European art. During a period of rapidly declining interest in Greco-Roman antiquity courageous artists from the 19th century continued, against all odds, in this field for the first third of the 20th century. Each painting took him just under a month; however his art became increasingly remote from the mainstream.
The sharp rise of the avant-garde of the20th century, had a very personal influence on Godward, as his work was not appreciated fully for its technical skill, traditional style, and beauty, just maybe it was these circumstances that led Godward to take his own life.
