Jean-Leon Gerome |
 |
| Born: 1824 - Died: 1904. |
| Jean-Leon Gérôme was born in Vesoul (Haute-SaOne) in 1824. Gérôme was a French painter and sculptor. He was a pupil of Paul Delaroche and inherited his highly finished academic style. He resisted the counter-revolutionary movements of the Impressionist artists begun by Manet, and Monet. Gérôme continued the development and conservation of French Neo Classicism.
Gérôme is undoubtedly best known as an Orientalist artist.
In 1854 Gérôme visited Turkey, North Africa, and finally Egypt. These journeys are clearly reflected in the subject matter of many of his paintings, featuring both the landscape and the characters of the regions. A couple of examples are “Excursion of the Harem” executed in 1869, and “The Slave Market” painted in 1867.
In 1865 the Institu De France elected Gérôme as a member.
It should also not be forgotten that Gerome was a very successful sculptor.
Jean-Léon Gérôme died in 1904 and is buried in the Montmartre Cemetery.
