Holman Hunt

Born: 1827 - Died: 1910.
Holman Hunt was born in Cheapside, London, the son of a warehouse manager, and was from the start keen to be an artist, despite discouragement from his father. Throughout his life Holman Hunt was a devout Christian, he was also serious minded and lacked fun and a sense of humor. He gained admission to the Royal Academy Schools on his third attempt, and there met Millais and Rossetti, later they formed The Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. Holman Hunt stayed most faithful tothe Pre-Raphaelite ideas and painting techniques, or as he put it, henever modified his 'uncompromising assertion of the principles of truthin preference to beauty'. His paintings were nearly all religious ormoralistic and are characterized by extreme detail and a brightness oflight. In 1854 Hunt visited the Holy Land, to see for himselfthe genuine background for the religious pictures he intended to paint, which was a very significant on the impact of Hunts painting. His paintings are always interesting, they were painted as a result of painstaking efforts, and he worked for a long time on each one. Hunt did not have the natural talent of Millais, or the intellect & vision of Rossetti. He made up for this by sheer hard work & commitment. He could have been a very successful portrait painter had he chosen to be so. In later years, as his sight started to fail, he was still capable of great things, however, as shown by his wonderful late picture ‘The Lady of Shallott”, surely one of the most powerful Pre-Raphaelite images. By the end of his career, Hunt became known as the father of Victorian painting. In 1905 He was awarded the Order of Merit by King Edward VII. Hunt married firstly Fanny Waugh, and after her death in childbirth her younger sister Edith. He was a far more attractive personality than is generally supposed, with a wide range of interests, which included horse racing and boxing. He died in 1910.
