Gustav Klimt |
 |
| Born: 1862 - Died: 1918. |
| Gustav Klimt was Austrian, born near Vienna, the second of seven children, three boys and four girls. Klimt lived in poverty for most of his childhood. He was enrolled, at 14, in the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied until 1883 where he received training as an architectural decorator. Klimt began his professional career painting interior murals in large public buildings.
During 1888, Klimt received the Golden order of Merit for his contributions to art. He also became an honorary member of the University of Vienna and the University of Munich.
In the early 1890's Klimt met Emilie Flöge, who was to be his companion until his death.
Klimt was the founder of the school of painting known as the Vienna Secession, which embodies the high-keyed erotic, psychological, and aesthetic preoccupations of turn of the century Vienna's dazzling intellectual world.
Gustav Klimt's 'Golden Phase' was marked by positive critical reaction and success. Many of his paintings from this period utilized gold leaf; the prominent use of gold. The work most popularly associated with this period is “The Kiss” painted between 1907 and 1908.
In 1911 his painting Death and Life and he received first prize in Rome, at the world exhibition.
In 1915 his mother Anna died.
Gustav Klimt died three years later in Vienna, of a stroke, he left numerous paintings were unfinished. The primal forces of sexuality, regeneration, love, and death formed the dominant themes of Klimt's work. |
