George Clausen |
 |
| Born: 1852 - Died: 1944. |
| George Clausen was an English painter, born in London, the son of a decorative artist. He attended the design classes at the South Kensington schools with great success. He worked Paris under Bouguereau, and Fleury. He became one of the foremost modern painters of landscape and of peasant life, influenced to a certain extent by the impressionists with whom he shared the view that light is the real subject of landscape art. His pictures excel in rendering the appearance of things under flecking outdoor sunlight, or in the shady shelter of a barn or stable. He was an elected associate of the Royal Academy in 1895. A was also a founder member of the New English Art Club.
Clausen responded to the heavy losses, in the First World War in 1916 by the painting, “Youth Mourning”. Later in the war he was commissioned to paint “In the Gun Factory at Woolwich Arsenal”.
After the war Clausen became one of Britain's most important artists. He was knighted in 1927, in recognition of his work. Sir George Clausen died aged ninety-two, in 1944.
