Gabriel Rosseti

Born: 1828 - Died: 1882.
Rossetti was the son of an Italian émigré scholar. Rossetti was born in London, and originally was named Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti. His family and friends called him "Gabriel", but in publications he put the name Dante first, because of its literary associations. Rossetti was a co- founder, with Millais and Holman Hunt of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood. He studied under Ford Maddox Brown, with whom he was to retain a close relationship throughout his life. Rossetti was always more interested in the Medieval, than in the modern side of the movement. He was publishing translations of Dante and other Medieval Italian poets, and his art also sought to adopt the stylistic characteristics of the early Italians. However, Rossetti increasingly preferred symbolic and mythological images to realistic ones. This was also true of his later poetry. Criticism of his paintings caused him to withdraw from public exhibitions and turn to watercolours, which could be sold privately. His visions of Arthurian romance and medieval design also inspired his new friends of this time, William Morris and Edward Burne Jones. Both these developments were precipitated by events in his private life, in particular by the death of his wife Elizabeth Siddal. She had taken an overdose of laudanum, shortly after giving birth to a dead child. Rossetti became increasingly depressed, and buried the bulk of his unpublished poems with her. He idealized her image as Dante's Beatrice in a number of paintings, such as " Beatrix". Following this trauma, he moved to a house in Cheyne Walk, where he lived for the most of the rest of his life. He lived in a curious fashion, with a menagerie of wild animals in his garden. His main companion was Fanny Cornforth, a basic cockney girl. In the late 1860s, Rossetti had his wife's body exhumed, to recover his poems. From this unhappy, and bizarre event, and the mental problems, which ultimately destroyed him, are most likely to have come. Rossetti became increasingly obsessed with Jane Morris, the wife of his friend William Morris. For most of the last twenty years of his life, his pictures were of single women, sumptuously coloured, in luxurious, but often claustrophobic surroundings. Most of these pictures had as their model, a stylized Jane Morris. In the 1870s Rossetti became addicted to chloral and alcohol, and finally Jane Morris broke with him, as he started to lose his reason. His health broken, he died at Birchington-on-Sea at Easter 1882.
