Edward Poynter |
 |
| Born: 1836 - Died: 1919. |
| Poynter decided to embark on an artistic career after meeting, and being inspired by Victorian artist Lord Frederic Leighton, after his visit to Rome, Leighton was clearly the most significant influence on his career. He studied in Paris under Charles Gleyre before returning to London during 1859. Poynter was undoubtedly a neo-classical painter, who produced many society portraits and landscape pictures; however which had never lived up to Leighton's work.
In 1896 he was knighted and elected President of the Royal Society, a role he served for 22 years. From the turn of the century Poynter's paintings declined both in numbers and standard, his main priority being the running of the Academy. Until his death Poynter resisted what he saw as the corruption, and denigration of all that was beautiful in art.
