Born: 1599 - Died: 1660.
Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez was the greatest Spanish painter and a major figure in European art. Born in Seville, of noble family, he was trained by Francisco Pacheco, whose daughter he married in 1618. His technique evolved from the tightly painted “Christ in the house of Martha and Mary” to loosely brushed mature works such as, “PhilipIV in Brown and Silver”. His earliest works are 'tavern scenes' or 'low-life' pictures with peasant models and still lifes, of foodstuffs and cooking implements. Velázquez was probably influenced by the naturalism of Caravaggio. In 1628-9 Velázquez met Rubens, who encouraged him to study Titian in the Spanish Royal Collection, and also to visit Italy. Velázquez went to Italy twice, in 1629-31 and 1649-51, to study Italian paintings and commission and acquire works of art on behalf of the King. During the last 20 years of his life Velázquez's work as court official and architect assumed prime importance. He was responsible for the decoration of many new rooms in the royal palaces. The key works of the painter's last two decades are “Fable of Arachne”, an image of sophisticated mythological symbolism, and his masterwork, “Las Meninas”, a stunning group portrait of the royal family and Velázquez himself in the act of painting. Velázquez continued to serve Philip IV as painter, courtier, and faithful friend until the artist's death in Madrid on August 6, 1660. Throughout his life, Velázquez demonstrated an ability to observe and record reality. He achieved ever greater physical and psychological naturalism using increasingly pronounced and elegant brushstrokes. Velázquez ultimately realised miraculous effects of illusion with an astounding, abbreviated technique that was to inspire future realists as well as the Impressionists. His work had a subtle impact a century later on his greatest successor, Francisco de Goya.
