Burne-Jones

Born: 1833 - Died: 1898.
BURNE-JONES, is probably one of the greatest of the second generation Pre-Raphaelites. The start of his life was tragic with his mother dying within a week of his birth. As a result he was raised by a severe Church housekeeper. Thus from an early age, Burne-Jones created his own dream world, to make up for his bleak & unhappy situation, his dream world lasted all his life. He attended art classes from a comparatively young age. Edward Jones, as he then was, became a devout Christian. Whilst at Exeter College in Oxford Burne-Jones met William Morris, together they developed a fascination with Arthurian legend, as well as it being their first encounter with the Pre-Raphaelites. Edward Burne-Jones was a nervous highly-strung man. He combined a mystical love of ancient legend, with a mischievous sense of humour. He frequently suffered nervous collapse after the completion of a major work, a typical classical artist trait. Georgiana, or Georgie as she was known, became his wife, the mother he never had, and managed his daily life. They had two children, a son Phillip, and a daughter Margaret. In the 1880s Burne-Jones became an overnight success story following his first public exhibition, he was heralded as one of the greatest artists. In the 1890s his health declined, and the death of his life long friend, William Morris in 1896, was a crushing blow. He had been created a baronet in 1894, but was unhappy about accepting the honour. Burne-Jones died suddenly at his house at Rottingdean in 1898.
