Agnolo Bronzino |
 |
| Born: 1503 - Died: 1572. |
| Bronzino was a Florentine Mannerist painter, the pupil and adopted son of Pontormo. Bronzino was his nickname possibly due to his dark complexion, (otherwise it must remain a mystery).
Bronzino lacked the emotional intensity of his father and master, so he turned his attention away from religious images, and dedicated most of his time to portraiture. He was court painter to Duke Cosimo I de Medici for most of his career, however for many his portraits convey a sense of almost insolent assurance. Nevertheless, Bronzino’s portraits had a significant influence on portraiture for most of the sixteenth century.
Bronzino was less successful as a religious painter, as his lack of real feeling leading often led to empty, elegant posturing, which can be traced back to his idols Raphael and Michelangelo. Bronzino was a founder member, in 1563, of the Accademia del Disegno.
br> One very curious fact about Bronzino however, is that amongst his pupils, was a student named Alessandro Allori, who was also his adopted son, just the same relationship as he had with his own father Pontormo.
